A firewall is a program that works to control a process, network traffic between different networks or host using a security. While firewalls are often discussed in the context of internet connectivity, and has been applied to other networks.

For example, many companies use a firewall to limit network connectivity to and from the internal network that is used to service more sensitive functions, such as accounting or personnel. By using a firewall to control connections to the regions, the organization can prevent unauthorized access to systems and resources. Inclusion of appropriate firewalls provide additional layers of security. Organizations often need to use a firewall to meet the security requirements of the mandate (eg, FISMA), some mandates, such as the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard, 1 specifically requires the firewall.
Some types of firewall technologies available. One way is to compare their ability to see the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) each layer is able to inspect. TCP / IP communication consists of four layers that work together to transfer data between hosts. When a user wants to transfer data over the network, data is passed from the highest layer through intermediate layers to the lowest layer, with each layer adding more information.
